What Does Auto Liability Cover?

Owning a vehicle is a significant responsibility; part of that responsibility is ensuring that you have the proper auto insurance coverage. One type of coverage you will probably need is auto liability insurance. This coverage is legally required in most states and helps pay for losses for which you are responsible. It usually includes two parts:Car being towed

  1. Property damage coverage may help pay for damage to another person’s property.
  2. Bodily injury coverage may help pay for medical bills and sometimes death benefits for the other person involved in an accident.

What Does Auto Liability Insurance Not Cover?

Liability coverage helps cover third-party damages if you’re found responsible for them because of an auto accident, but it doesn’t cover damages to your property or your injuries. For a more complete auto insurance policy, you may also want to consider the following:

  • Collision coverage may help cover the cost of damage to your vehicle if you are involved in a collision with a vehicle or object, regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage may help cover damages to your vehicle unrelated to a collision, such as theft, weather damage or vandalism.
  • Medical payments (MedPay) coverage may help pay for the medical bills of you or your passengers if you are involved in an auto accident.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may help pay for your medical expenses and property damage if you’re in an accident with an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run driver.

Additional coverages may be necessary based on your unique situation, such as gap coverage, new car replacement coverage, towing and labor cost coverage or ride-sharing coverage.

How Much Does Auto Liability Coverage Cost?

The cost of auto liability insurance varies depending on a variety of factors, including the following:

  • The type of vehicle
  • Your driving record
  • Annual mileage
  • Where you live
  • Your age and driving experience

Do I Need Auto Liability Insurance?

Most states, including Indiana, require all car owners to carry auto liability insurance, but each state’s exact policy and limit requirements may vary. Discussing your auto insurance policy with a qualified provider is critical to ensure you have enough coverage for your vehicle type, driving habits, location and needs.
